Andy Du Plessis

Managing Director at FoodForward South Africa

Andy Du Plessis, the Managing Director of FoodForward SA for the past 5
years, started his career in the public sector with the Western Cape’s
Provincial Health Department’s Social Development Programme.

Because of his desire for wanting to make an even greater impact, he made
a career change when offered the opportunity to head the Peninsula
School Feeding Association, an NPO that specialises in school feeding
programmes. During his 15 year tenure there, he was instrumental in
improving the operations, finances, and the credibility of PSFA, and in partnership with the
Department of Education, improved the breakfast and lunch menu for 400,000 school children in the
Western Cape.

Andy joined FoodForward SA (formerly FoodBank SA) in 2013 as the MD, an organisation using a
unique model called Foodbanking to address short-term hunger – by recovering quality edible surplus
food from the supply chain, and redistributing this food to 600 credible charities across the country
addressing hunger in needy communities.

Andy has spearheaded significant innovative change in FoodForward SA since his arrival, by
introducing digital technology to connect beneficiary organisations to retail stores and food outlets,
for the regular collection of surplus food, as well their initiative called Second Harvest, a specific
outreach programme to commercial farmers and growers across South Africa, for the recovery of
surplus fruit and vegetables.

Andy holds a B. Admin Degree; an honours degree in Public Administration; and an Honours Degree
in Theology.
