Consumer Goods Council of South Africa (CGCSA) expresses grave concern over attacks on foreign nationals

The CGCSA represents over 12 000 members, consisting of retailers and manufacturers operating within the consumer goods industry. It has issued the following statement:

“We are appalled by the attacks on foreign nationals in South Africa. No form of discontent can justify this kind of behaviour. It is wrong to target any section of society on the basis of their nationality, and no form of violence is acceptable. Hurting innocent people will not improve the quality of life of any South African.

Our member companies count foreigners living in South Africa both as customers and as employees. A significant number of our members have operations in Africa north of South Africa’s borders and have always enjoyed a good relationship with the countries in which they trade, being welcomed as positive investors. The current spate of violence erodes confidence in our country, both internally and internationally. South African nationals and companies operating in the rest of Africa are endangered as a result.

The CGCSA calls for an immediate end to the violence and a united front on the part of all those who uphold democratic values, social justice and the rule of law. We have confidence that our leadership will take strong and unequivocal action to resolve this critical issue once and for all.
