Illicit trade: is South Africa winning the war

Event • General

StartAugust 6, 2019

Illicit trading poses a serious threat to both economic growth and national security, and its impact is being felt across the economy through job losses and reduced tax income for the fiscus. There are also concerns about health due to the proliferation of illegal and illicit food products and beverages. The Consumer Goods Council of South Africa (CGCSA) in 2018 convened the first ever workshop on illicit trade, at which industry experts, government officials and the police discussed how to deal with this scourge. CGCSA in 2019 is conven- ing a follow-up workshop, where the key discussion will focus on whether South Africa is winning the war against illicit trade. At the workshop, experts will provide progress reports on measures agreed at the last workshop, and chart the way forward.
