GS1's Global Registry Reaches 10 Million Registered Items PDF Print E-mail

BRUSSELS, Belgium, September 10, 2012 - GS1®, a not-for-profit organisation that designs and manages a global system of standards and solutions to improve the efficiency and visibility of supply chains across industries, announced today that its GS1 Global Registry® has reached 10 million product items.

When GS1 launched
its Global Data Synchronisation Network (GS1 GDSN®) in October 2004, there were only 74,000 items shared among trading partners in 13 countries in the Global Registry.  Today, over 25,000 companies have made the GS1 GDSN a cornerstone of their supply chain initiatives in more than 150 countries across multiple industry sectors.

Customs capacity to fight counterfeits strengthened by WCO/GS1 cooperation agreement PDF Print E-mail

Kunio Mikuriya, Secretary General of the World Customs Organization (WCO), and Miguel Lopera, President and Chief Executive Officer of GS1, signed a cooperation agreement on 4 September 2012 aimed at exploring ways to optimize the fight against counterfeiting and piracy.

The WCO and GS1 have agreed to maintain a continuous working relationship on all Customs related matters, particularly by leveraging the use of WCO tools and GS1 identification standards, as part of international efforts to tackle the illicit trade in counterfeit and pirated goods.

The Interface Public-Members (IPM) tool was launched by the WCO in 2010 to enhance communication between Customs and rights holders, facilitate the sharing of information, and strengthen the capacity of Customs officials to better combat counterfeiting and piracy.

CGCSA – Taking Business into Africa

Africa’s rapidly expanding middle class is grabbing the attention of manufacturers and retailers around the world, all eager to do business in ‘The New Frontier’. To exploit this interest, the Consumer Goods Council of South Africa (CGCSA) will be hosting a business breakfast at SAITEX, the Southern African International Trade Exhibition, with the theme ‘Taking Your Business into Africa’.



“Seven of the world’s fastest growing national economies are in Africa, so it’s no surprise that the world is knocking on our door,” says show organiser John Thomson of Exhibition Management Services. SAITEX and sister show Africa’s Big Seven (AB7) take place at Gallagher Convention Centre, Midrand, Johannesburg from 30 June to 2 July 2013.

Consumer Goods Council of South Africa welcomes the release of the University of Stellenbosch report on meat labelling

 

In February this year the University of Stellenbosch’s research report featured prominently in the media after disclosing that a number of samples of meat from unnamed retailers across the country contained DNA from other “non-declared” animal species. Leading retail groups which are members of the Consumer Goods Council of South Africa (CGCSA) are confident that the results published by the Stellenbosch University are due to cross-contamination.

 

“The CGCSA has consistently maintained that its members are committed to compliance with ethical and legal meat practices, and follow appropriate and best practices in food safety, quality procedures and protocol,” says Gwarega Mangozhe, CGCSA’s CEO.

GS1 Celebrates 40 Years of The Global Language of Business

GS1, the neutral, not-for-profit organisation that facilitates collaboration amongst trade partners with global standards across 150 countries is celebrating its 40th Anniversary.

On April 3rd 1973, leaders of the American grocery industry selected a single standard for product identification that the world now knows as the GS1 Bar Code. The decision created a global language of business that until today allows visibility in the entire supply chain in multiple sectors.

CGCSA’s comment on tighter regulations for salt, tobacco use

The Consumer Goods Council of South Africa is shocked and disappointed by the article regarding the salt reduction regulations. Following the process of policy promulgation(salt reduction), the CGCSA on behalf of its food members wrote to the Minister of Health on alternative approaches to ensure effective implementation of this initiative.

 

The industry fully supports the goal of reducing salt in order to enhance public health. However, we are concerned that should these alternative measures not be taken into consideration, the impact of these good intentions will not be effective due to a number of reasons such as unrealistic timelines; lack of consumer education and cost implications as per the proposed draft regulations.

“The industry still hopes that the ministry will consider these concerns and grant us the opportunity to work together to the ultimate benefit of the consumer, says Ronel Burger, Head of the Food Safety Initiative at CGCSA”.

 

On a positive note confirmation has been received from the ministry for further engagement on the salt reduction matter.
