Economic & Legislative Affairs PDF Print E-mail

The Economic and Legislative Affairs unit aims to promote the industry’s understanding of the legislative and regulatory framework governing the fast moving consumer goods in South Africa.

Within that framework, the unit advocates for systems, processes and principles that would enable trade to be better, faster, efficient and environmentally friendly.

This division meets regularly with the various government departments and parliamentary portfolio committees relating to trade and industry, environmental affairs, fisheries, agriculture, health as well as authorities including the South African Bureau of Standards (SABS) and South African National Accreditation Service (SANAS).

The unit’s work includes project work undertaken on a committee basis, with each committee co-chaired by a representative of a manufacturer and a retail organisation.

The Economic and Legislative Affairs division’s scope of work include policies on efficiencies of inputs and services, hazardous goods, food legislation, trade environment and compliance, environment, customs and congestion management.

The unit has initiated industry working groups on issues including food law, disinfectants, exports, sweets and chocolates, logistics and advertising.
